Run, Jump, and Give: Rita’s Speech

Thank you everyone for coming out to support our Superior Tofu Community Fund charity fundraising event ….

When I was young, I was told to share my toys with my sister.  I didn’t understand why I had to share, and I might not have been pleased about it.  But I did as I was told, because if I didn’t, there would be the …”or else” to follow.

As I grew older, I started to live and then to learn the true meaning of sharing.  There is a saying “Shared joys are double; shared sorrows are halved.”  Over the years, I have learned how true it is.  It is much more meaningful and fun to share a meal, to share a joke and to share your success with friends and family…. than it is to be successful, but alone.

When I was in trouble, it was the generosity from my friends, my family, business associates …..and sometimes strangers that lifted my spirit and helped me through tough times.  Maybe you also have had this happen in your life?  It was in that same spirit that we established the Superior Tofu Community Fund with the Vancouver Foundation.  We wanted to share our success with people who supported us over the years; our customers, suppliers, stakeholders, and community at large.

One evening, I was flipping through my copy of Vancouver Foundation Magazine (while I was digging into my  delicious and only 65 calorie Soytreats). Yes a shameless plug! there was this warm fuzzy feeling oozing all over me.  I learned that in 2008, the Vancouver foundation distributed $60 million to support various BC charities and communities.  I read about arts and music projects which inspire and lift up the next generation. I read about grants to assist those in really hard times, to rise again. And I learned about a housing project for the homeless which provide shelter and hot meals.  One story struck a chord in my heart. It was a grant to help young mothers find housing. Once upon a time, I was a young mother facing similar problems and some pretty tough circumstances.

The true value of Vancouver Foundation’s grants in 2008 was far more than $60 million.  How do you put a price on the value of saving a youth from a life of troubles, the price of helping someone to reach greatness in life or to providing compassionate care to those who are in need.

Our company has a simple promise that reads  ” We are passionate about your well being. Pure And Simple”.  And tonight that “well being” is beyond the wholesome quality of our tofu, it’s about the well being of people. It’s about our community… regardless of race or roots.   Pure. And Simple.

I sincerely thank each of you, our special friends for joining us this evening to help raise money for our foundation.
