This tofu has a very firm, dense meat-like texture, and is made with certified organic soybeans. Referred to often as the “other, other white meat,” this popular mainstream variety is often used as a meat substitute.
Serving Suggestions
Crumble by hand, or with a fork or potato masher. The consistency will resemble ground turkey, chicken or pork - but it’s cholesterol-free! Use in pasta sauces, chilis, meatloaves, burgers and tacos. Cube or slice in stirfries or use in wraps and fajitas as vegetarian strips. Can be grilled or barbequed, but be sure to marinate overnight so the tofu can soak up more flavour.
Storage and Handling
Tofu is pasteurized without preservatives. As a perishable product, always refrigerate tofu and handle it as you would meat or dairy products. Good for 3 days after opening. An unopened package is good up to the stamped expiry date, if it hasn’t been subject to temperature abuse.
Wrap unused portions with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator. Handle gently when cutting as the tofu is very fragile.
Freezing Tofu
You can freeze this classic as well as other Asian Classic varieties. When frozen, the tofu develops air pockets and becomes drier and more porous in texture. This texture makes the tofu chewier with a more meat like texture. Once frozen, the tofu is good for up to 3 months. The tofu will turn slightly yellow or beige in colour. Thaw tofu overnight in refrigerator or approximately 8 hours at room temperature. Squeeze out excess water before using.
